The CBI arrested an Under Secretary in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for allegedly seeking a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh in exchange for issuing a Statement of Need to a medical professional. 

Officials said that the MoHFW Under Secretary, identified as Sonu Kumar, had been approached for a Statement of Need by the complainant’s friend’s son, who is a doctor and a resident of the US. 

The document is generally issued by the Health Ministry to Indian doctors to enable them to pursue higher medical studies in the US.

The complainant also attached a printout of the certificate which was sent by the Under Secretary through e-mail.
